My favourite remix of all times is probably Mark de Clive-Lowe's rework of Shirley Horne's "Return to Paradise" on Verve remixed. So when it turned out he was game for a collab I just had to record a classic sounding jazz balad for him to do his thing with. Though it didn't come at once to me. Sure the chords were there but the melody and lyrics were left behind somewhere on the other side of a barrier. I left it for a week or so but every time I tried it the pages remained blank. So one brave morning I decided to put on my finest tailored jazz suit with shirt and vest and wear it every day until I had completed the song. Perhaps dressing like the old masters of jazz would turn me into one? Two windy but beautiful autumn days later it was recorded and done. Working with Anni for the first time was really exciting and she surely had a lot of new input to give, just like you would imagine the women behind the famous female voices of classic jazz had too. Having sent the final result to Mark to play around with I was listening to it at home when I read on the internet that one of the most legendary beatconductors of our time, Jay-Dee had passed away only 33 years old. Apparently he was spending his last time in the hospital making beats on his MPC. I listened to the lyrics of my own song and it struck me that they described a musical soul, stuck just like that… but also made me feel that it's never, ever too late to be expressing yourself . And that the music doesn't even stop when the heart does. Ten minutes later an mp3 of Mark's half of the song shook my inbox… it was a Jay-dee tribute.
